Dr. Charles Perkins will be the new Rockingham County Schools Superintendent when Dr. Stover steps down in June 2026.

According to Dr. Stover, "I think the Board made an excellent choice. I have had the privilege of working closely with Dr. Perkins for over 3 years now. He is one of the finest educators with whom I have worked – and I have literally worked across the country. He is an original thinker, innovative risk taker, highly organized, and deeply passionate about the success of all students, particularly our students in Rockingham County. He could easily be a superintendent in any district across our country, but has chosen to stay in Rockingham County, where he was raised and graduated from HS. He has been highly successful in everything he has done, including being named the RCS teacher of the year, earning National Board Certification, working as a principal at all levels, and being named the RCS principal of the year. He has been in his current role since 2014 and the results speak for themselves. Under his leadership the District has “punched above its weight” in almost all state measurements. Even with the set back of the pandemic, which disproportionately affected RCS students, we have been able to bounce back. Just this year, under Dr. Perkins’ leadership, the District has an almost 22 point increase in the number of students achieving a proficient score on the ACT (over a 100% rate of change) as well as a 12 point increase in percent of students passing AP exams – with more exams being taken (an almost 50% rate of change). "
